I love reality television. While I’m not afraid to admit it, I do need to clarify. I don’t love all reality tv. I don’t like watching shows with lots of girl-fights, sex, or crudeness. At one time, I wouldn’t have minded it so much, but as I’ve pulled back from my television viewing, those shows become more and more shocking, and I don’t want it in my mind.
However, there are some shows that I love, and some shows that motivate me to be a better person.
Hoarders – my fridge gets bleached.
Wife Swap – laundry gets completed.
19 Kids and Counting – I talk softer.
Right now, 19 Kids is my fave show. I’m obsessed with how the Duggar family manages the house, cooks their meals, and most importantly, how they parent. While it’s fun to see the inner workings of their large family, I love the character Jim Bob and Michelle have developed in their children, and the discipline and self-control that their kids have.
I also love how Jim Bob is with his daughters. It’s almost the ideal father-daughter relationship. He is their champion and protector, and the girls love him and see him as everything that a daddy should be.
However, my favorite part is that the kids are always encouraging each other. When the kids are in their one-on-one interviews, I always expect them to be sarcastic or snarky, but they never are. They constantly give each other the benefit of the doubt. They constantly encourage.
I like that.
